Valerie June - Pushin' Against a Stone and More on the Moon

Miss June has just released this album over in the UK and it is brilliantly un-categorizable. Wikipedia says: "Her sound encompasses a mixture of folk, blues, gospel, soul, Appalachian and bluegrass." Some of it would fit well into the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack whilst elsewhere the influence of the co producer/writer Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys fame is evident. Her voice is not what you might expect; to start with it reminds the Moon of Dead Flowers era Caitlin Rose but her voice soon gets richer as is the case with Miss Rose on her albums. Stream for free via the playlist below from Deezer or you can find it on Spotify.

It is actually her 3rd solo LP along with a 5 track EP but these previous records are only currently available in the US see details here. On Groveshark there is a live radio acoustic performance called Ardent presents which features some of the earlier material. Back in 2004 when she was 19 she also released an album with her then husband as Bella Sun which is available on Deezer

Update: Her previous albums are now available on Deezer and Spotify so check out A Best of the Rest of Valerie Stone on the Moon
