James Cook on the Moon

Another great discovery thanks primarily to the VPME blog but also featured in God Is In The TV. Mr Cook was the lead singer in the electro pop outfit called Nemo which was active, according to the title track of his first solo LP, "at the arse end of Britop" but "no one in London noticed".

Since then he found cultural asylum in Berlin and released a gorgeous orchestral pop album under the name of The Dollhouse with the violinist/string arranger Anne Marie Kirby who has also worked on his two subsequent solo LPs. He has continued to be inspired by dear old Blighty however and his sound, from his first solo LP, to his latest has become distinctly Britpop like in the vein of The Divine Comedy or My Life Story. Many of the tracks such as Financial Tango and Bring Back the Boom are instantly getable and sound like an un-overblown Marc Almond singing politically aware Neil Hannon songs. Jamie, his reworking of Jackie by Jacques Brel adds some great new lyrics such as: "My name would then be Simon Cowell plucking stars out of my bowels."

His new album has been streamable via his Bandcamp page, along with his full solo/The Dollhouse/Nemo back catalogue and is embedded below but is officially released today and will hopefully be available to stream in the usual places like his last LP.
